Illinois 101
Welcome to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Chartered as the Illinois Industrial University in 1867 and renamed as the University of Illinois in 1885, we are one of the original 37 land-grant institutions created when Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862.
And for nearly 150 years, Illinois has been teaching our students, conducting the research that changes our world and establishing this little Midwestern community as a place where hard work and brilliant ideas are just part of the daily experience.
As a state-supported institution, with more than 40,000 students and some 12,000 faculty and staff, Illinois can sometimes seem like a complicated place to work. From the big picture - like our organizational structure or our budgeting process – to the small – like how you get a parking permit – Illinois 101 will give you a quick introduction to how we work today and some insight into the rich traditions and historical foundations that got us here in the first place.
Use the links on the left to learn a little more about how we work and to start creating your own Illinois experience.
