Tuition Funds

Tuition dollars are allocated through a combination of methods. Each college receives undergraduate tuition dollars through the combination of the number of instructional units it generates and the number of undergraduate majors. Differential tuition (incremental to the base tuition rates and charged in programs that have higher costs of instruction) is allocated back to the college based on the number of majors.  Graduate tuition also is allocated back to the college.

Certain academic units are able to generate enough funds through tuition to enable them to cover their costs without incremental campus support. These units operate on what is called a “self-sustaining budget.” Some non-academic units also function without the use of state or gift funds, and instead rely on payment for services. These units are often called charge-back units.
