Council of Academic Professionals

Created in 1973 by the chancellor, the Council of Academic Professionals (CAP) is an elected body representing 11 campus districts that today include nearly 4,000 academic professionals on the Urbana campus. CAP serves the interests of full-time, part-time, and retired APs by providing formal and informal communications with university administration; drafting and reviewing policies affecting APs; appointing representatives to campus committees; interviewing candidates for key campus administrative positions; guiding the selection process for the chancellor’s annual CAPE Award; and mediating and arbitrating AP grievances.

Academic professionals campuswide elect colleagues to represent each district, serving three-year staggered terms. A non-voting liaison from the Office of Academic Human Resources is also a member.

Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month, and are open to all APs. Locations and times can be found on the CAP Web site. Additionally, CAP’s monthly e-newsletter provides updates on current issues of interest to APs.
