What's in a Title?
In 1997, changes were approved to consolidate nearly 1400 academic professional titles to a much smaller number of standard titles. This change allows for a more streamlined process and more flexibility for functional title assignments. Examples of standard AP titles include Dean, Director, Coordinator, and Specialist. Although the standard titles are brief, employing units may designate more descriptive functional titles to their positions. For example, a position approved under the Director standard may carry a functional title of “Director of Operations” or “Director, External Affairs.”
Unlike Civil Service titles and positions on campus, AP titles are not directly tied to a uniform pay scale; independent units establish their own compensation schedules for their AP positions. This flexibility can result in some variations in salary levels for similar titles across the campus.
