Staff members on campus (and their families) are eligible for a number of different insurance programs and benefits. These fall into two categories: benefits provided by the State of Illinois and supplemental benefits provided by the university.
Core benefits provided by the state of Illinois
Most of the core insurance programs are negotiated and administered by the state’s Department of Central Management Services. State-administered insurance coverage includes: health, dental, vision, life, accidental death and dismemberment, long-term care and flexible spending accounts. The coverages, enrollment options and costs are negotiated by the state each year.
Once each year, employees are offered the opportunity to make changes in coverage options or to enroll in new programs. This is called the Benefit Choice period. It is very well advertised and typically runs during the month of May.
Supplemental benefits provided by the university
The university also offers a number of optional benefits and programs that can supplement or expand those provided by the state of Illinois. Optional benefits employees are eligible to receive include plans for: additional life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, long-term disability, tax-deferred retirement plans, and same-sex domestic partner health insurance.
