State Universities Retirement System (SURS)

Academic professionals on the Urbana-Champaign campus are automatically enrolled in the Illinois State Universities Retirement System (SURS). SURS participation begins on the first day of employment and requires a mandatory contribution to the retirement plan. Eight percent (8%) of an employee’s gross earnings is automatically deducted from each paycheck. The university also contributes a percentage of your salary into your retirement account. The contributions employees make to SURS will not be subject to federal taxes until funds are withdrawn following retirement.

SURS offers several different retirement plans and within six months of being hired, employees have to decide which plan is right for their needs. This is a one-time decision and the choice will determine the benefits available to the employee for life. The campus offers numerous orientation and planning seminars to help staff members make these critical decisions.

SURS also manages survivor, disability, and death benefits for employees of the University of Illinois.
