Changing Employment Groups
Once you’ve been here for a while, you’ll probably notice that many of your colleagues aren’t working in the same positions or units where they started their Illinois careers. On a campus this large with new programs and projects constantly under development, new opportunities for academic professionals are continually emerging. You may just find one of these that fits your interest and skills before too long.
Also, keep in mind that there are more than 7,000 civil service jobs on this campus. You may have entered the community in an academic professional position, but there is absolutely no reason why you should hesitate to explore the opportunities these positions might offer.
Now, while no one ever enjoys losing a great member of their team, you’ll also find that this campus truly does encourage individuals to advance in their careers and to look for new challenges. Just remember, this is, at the end of the day, a pretty small community. You may not work directly with the same people in your new job, but you’re still going to see them formally and informally for years to come.
Changing jobs within the University community is a pretty common event here and one that usually happens with best wishes on all sides. Again, this is a big campus with many, many great opportunities. Taking advantage of them is one of the reasons you came here in the first place.
