Search Committees
What you want to know about the Academic Professional hiring process on campus depends a lot on whether you’re the one looking for a job, or you’re the one looking for a new staff member.
For academic professional hires on campus, there are a number of steps that must be followed (and of course, forms to be completed). When an AP position is vacated or created, a search committee is convened to assist in the determination and selection of qualified candidates to fill the position. The search committee will be composed of a chair (or co-chairs, possibly) and any number of other individuals who will review applicants, conduct interviews, check references and make final hiring recommendations.
Composition, size and actual procedures of committees will again vary by the individual college or unit – another case of decentralization and flexibility on campus. However, there are some common basic components and campus-wide policies when it comes to searching and hiring.
