New Employees
Congratulations! You navigated the search process and you’ve been offered (in writing) and accepted (in writing) your new job. Now it’s time to start thinking about all of those little details that come with a new job in a new place. From figuring out where to park to how you get paid to signing up for insurance – you’re going to have a lot of questions and a lot of decisions to make.
You’ll find your new unit and coworkers to be a great resource for you. And many colleges and larger departments offer special orientation programs and assistance to new hires.
We’ve also put together some campus resources to help you successfully and (hopefully) calmly start to make some sense of your new experience.
New Employee Benefits Checklist
Some of the most important, but sometimes the most confusing, choices you’ll face will be centered on your benefits (insurance, retirement, etc.) as a new staff member. The Benefits Checklist is a great step-by-step guide to what you need to do and where you need to start. If you don’t get a copy of this from your new unit, download a copy via the link below.

New faculty and academic professional orientation
Each fall, the campus sponsors an orientation program for new academic staff. It’s a great introduction to the history and the operating culture and organizational structure of the campus. Even if you’re hired mid-year, make sure you sign up for this when it comes around.

Getting started with NESSIE (online center for benefits)
The Office of University Human Resources maintains a centralized web resource called NESSIE (Net-driven Employee Self-Service and Information Environment) to offer advice and information on your options and to allow you to personally monitor and manage your own personal benefit packages. You’ll want to bookmark NESSIE and one of the first things you’ll want to do is to set up your account (login and password) information on the site.
